My new midi steel guitar, comming right along.

A while back I posted a thread when I'd just gotten started with my new midi steel guitar.

https://vi-control.net/community/threads/my-new-steel-guitar-what-do-you-think.73502/#post-4258944

I've managed to get a lot further along, the scripting is nearly complete, but I've still got some testing to do yet. However I do have another song to show you and this time it's on YouTube.

What I did here is record a steel guitar off YouTube with David Hartley playing "Crazy Arms". When I recorded it, I also captured a video of just the steel guitar as David played it. At the time, I got the video just for my own reference to see which strings were being used.

So from there I created my own backing track and programmed my steel to play exactly what I thought David played. When I got all the midi down and ready to mix, I added the video and was amazed how it went with my mix. So I made a YouTube of the video along with my mix and I'd like to know, what do you think. :)

Here are some pictures of how it's looking in Kontakt so far.

Very impressive. How complex and labor-intensive was the MIDI, and how many of all those dozens of controls were put to use?

Thanks my friend, the FX on tab-2 are just for manual use, they're not controlled by any CC controllers.

Most of the controllers used are for pitch, volume, and vibrato. Also the ahdsr envelope is important, all it's controls are assigned CC controllers.

I'm hoping to have some YouTube vids put together soon, showing how it works. I'm anxious to get some feedback from the VI-Control folks regarding the way it works.

It SOUNDS remarkable. Very much looking forward to it. Obviously it’s early, but any ideas on pricing yet?

Thanks burp, no I don't really know about price. I've put a lot of time into it and of course I have thought about it. I've made several Kontakt instruments over the years since Kontakt-2 first came out, but I made them primarily for myself and I've always just given them away to friends.

Once I get some videos together so I can run them by the VI Control folks. I might have a better idea.

I’ll be your friend..............

Seriously, can’t wait to see the final product. A wildly underrepresented instrument.

Ha ha, well hi there my friend.:)

The steel is a difficult instrument to play and there's not a lot of truly great pedal steel players around today, at least not in the perspective with other instruments. Guys like Jim Bob Gairret are hard to find.

It takes both feet, both knees, both hands and 3 to 4 fingers to play the pedal steel at it's best. That's rather difficult to mimic with midi, especially with a live keyboard. Actually it's not that difficult to program, but it is rather complex. My goal is to make a midi pedal steel guitar that can mimic almost anything a good steel guitar player can play. :2thumbs:

Sounds great! I think we need instructional videos now so by the time it comes out we can play it <g>.

sounds fantastic, I'm impressed! is this reasonable playable with a normal midi-Keyboard?

Thanks ohernie, as I mentioned above, instructional videos are in the making and before I put it on the market I want to run the videos by all you VI-Control folks. ;)

Thanks Wolf68, in regards to playing live, I hope to have a Performance instrument nki too that will be playable, but just how playable is yet to be determined. Right now all the keyswitches and available keys with samples will fit a 61 key keyboard.

One of the problems is that in chords with 2 or more notes, some notes might need to go up while another might need to come down to get the right transition. Also there are many times one note might go down 1/2 step while another goes down a whole step.

In the main instrument the keyswitches determine which controller is used for pitch bend, CC1, CC2, CC3, or CC4. Also the velocity of the keyswitches determine how much pitch bend each controller will have.

It's easy to see that a Performance version will have to be set up very different.

My hat is off you you!

Pedal Steel is a beast of an instrument to play, and I can't even imagine what it takes to translate that to a sample library. I will be sitting here, picks and slide in hand, waiting. And if there is anything I can offer to help let me know.

I'm a big fan and live user of the apparently now abandoned Wavelore Steel, so I'm looking forward to this instrument!!

Nuthin' to it...

• Two MIDI Expression pedals.

• Two MIDI Knee paddles

• One mod wheel

• One keyboard

I'll get right on it!

Thanks very much all of you. :)

I just might take you up on that. ;)

When I get the instruction videos done, I could use your thoughts on ways to use it live. :)
