Samplemodeling brass question

You can't go wrong with Chris Hein Horns (full or the light library) if you mix them right.
Also...Kirk Hunter brass instruments can blend in nicely.
(....these two libraries don't have any 'baked-in' reverb, which means you get them set up in the mix the way you want them to sound.)

Depending on the type of horn section you want.....

The 'Jerry Hey' sound? (2 trpts, trbn, tenor sax)....(2 trpts, alto, tenor)
EWF? (from trpt, trbn, sax....to 3 trpts, 2 trbns, 3 saxes)
Tower of Power? (2 trpts, alto, tenor, bari)
old Memphis Horns? (trpt, tenor....or trpt, tenor, tbone)
large NYC, Nashville sound? (3 trpts, 2trbn, bass tbone, alto, tenor, bari)
Latin band horn section? (2 trpts, trbn, 2 saxes)....(3 trombones!)

etc., etc., etc......

I'm a trombone player, and have played in a lot of different horn sections and various combinations, and have also written a lot of different commercial-type horn arrangments.

Watch out for what library samples you choose for trombone, and how you mix it!

The trombone should just be there to add some 'fatness' to the horn section.

Not an 'orchestral trombone' fatness...*don't use the biggest and loudest orchestral trombones for a pop horn secton sound.....use a very subtle blending type of fatness that is just kind of 'felt'.... an octave lower than the trumpets that helps bring out the best in the trumpets and overall horn section sound.

For a realistic horn section, the trombone shouldn't 'stick out'....unless you're doing a Latin band horn section with trombones as the featured horns....or unless you're trying to emulate the 'Chicago' band sound with Jimmy Pankow playing a lead role once in awhile on the trombone.
